I am a graphic/illustration artist presently residing in London. I graduated with a BFA (hons) in Furniture & Product design from Hong-Ik University in Seoul. Following graduation I took up a career as Senior Graphic Designer in Hyundai Company in Seoul. I have since received a Masters degree in ‘Art and Media Practice’ from the University Of Westminster, London, in 2005. I have been working in Illustration and Graphic area by doing projects with various artists and galleries as the project basis exhibition since 2001.
I believe that literature and image have thread of connection, and that each element has its own unique ‘voice’. I enjoyed reading the fantastical literature of Jorge Luis Borges and the fairy tales of Lewis Carroll, and I like imagining and visualizing the metaphors and symbols found in their work. I particularly love to interpret things differently, recover hidden message, and identify double meaning as visual image from things. Oppositely I enjoy hiding and condensing symbol into images so that the observer can interpret this in multiple ways like Maze and Zip file. This interest has played a considerable part in providing me with the motivation and passion for my creative work.
One of my projects, interpretation of literature [Alice in Wonderland, Lewis Carroll] and [The Aleph, The Garden of Forking Paths, Borges], frequently displays such expressions played meaning in meaning, story within a story. Despite using linear progressive media, these pieces of work convey the non-linear progression, and visual modes of communication – as images can convey a message in a far quicker, more precise manner – hence my desire has been to construct my own unique ‘visual language’ inspired by these wonderful pieces of work. The completion of the past project allowed me to achieve a high level of illustrative innovation, which is my strongest skill, as well as the ability to present hidden meanings visually. These abilities along with other competences gained through various projects were highly appraised at a BBC radio2/6music Art competition held by the BBC in 2005.
My vision is to gain artistic credit by developing my ambitions and interests through tough challenges and various practices. I believe that a competent designer is able to manifest contemporary culture and the characteristics of society and must continue to develop myself by attaining the understanding of different cultures, theories, and experiences.
2008.
